Lecture - "The ongoing study of Lascaux's archaeological objects"
Thursday 21 November 2024, at 6 pm, Musée d’Anthropologie Préhistorique
This lecture explores the ongoing study of Lascaux's archaeological objects, and particularly the collections at the French National Museum of Prehistory in Les Eyzies-de-Tayac. The quantity, quality, and condition of the cave paintings and the history of their discovery have forged the legend of Lascaux, making the site a sort of "ambassador" for this remarkable palaeolithic heritage. Less well known is the high archaeological price the caves have paid, so costly that now, 84 years on, experts are still struggling to piece together the archaeological data they contain.

Theatre - "C'est un métier d'homme"
Tuesday 10 December 2024, at 8 pm, Théâtre Princesse Grace
A conference room. Joyous mayhem. A pair of oddballs trade ever more outrageous boasts. One is a champion skier. The other is a psychoanalyst. Or a great drinker, or a "show terminator". But every brag begins with the same repeated phrase: "my job involves...". With a mix of pride and ridicule, they paint a series of burlesque self-portraits of "men's work", and in doing so topple from the pedestal of their own megalomania.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo - "DIPTYCH"
Wednesday 11 December 2024, at 7.30 pm, Grimaldi Forum Monaco
2024/2025 Season - Monaco Dance Forum. The spotlight comes on and we find ourselves pitched into the mind of a man, as the story of his life flashes before him, interwoven with those of other people, past and future. Thus begins the labyrinthine two-part journey of Diptych, through the passageways of a ship. Time, memory, and premonition whirl around illusions, utopias, and the lost loves of a couple and blinded characters, actors in their own story. At every stage of their quest, they are thrown off course by uncontrollable forces of nature.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo - "LA EDAD DE ORO"
Thursday 12 December 2024, at 7.30 pm, Théâtre des Variétés
2024/2025 Season - Monaco Dance Forum. With flamenco, as with every art form, historians, specialists, and critics gradually identified particular periods. The period they called "La Edad de Oro", the golden age of flamenco, ran from the late 19th century to the 1930s. It was a time when the emphasis was very much on singing and dancing, with the guitar becoming popular much later. According to this tradition, and aside from some special exceptions, no contemporary singer or dancer could hope to match the quality, purity, and creativity of those who bore flamenco to its very pinnacle, and forged the legend of the golden age.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo - "LAST WORK"
Friday 13 December 2024, at 7.30 pm, Grimaldi Forum Monaco
2024/2025 Season - Monaco Dance Forum. The sheer energy and density of Last Work by legendary choreographer Ohad Naharin are infused with an ephemeral aura. A sensation of clarity and reflection, like the calm at the eye of a hurricane. Unflappable, a person in the background runs across a set for the whole 70 minute duration of the piece. Seemingly fleeing or dreaming of flight, the body remains locked on the spot. Perhaps symbolising the desire for progress?

Tuesday 17 December 2024, at 7.30 pm, Théâtre des Variétés
2024/2025 Season - Monaco Dance Forum. First popularised in the 1920s and 30s, dance marathons saw couples attempt to keep dancing continuously for as long as they could (simply swaying or stepping were allowed), in the hope of winning a prize of around one hundred dollars. The crash of 1929 brought such grinding poverty that participants were prepared to go to any lengths for a few bucks, turning normally joyous dance marathons into horror balls.

Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo - "MADE IN OSLO"
Wednesday 18 December 2024, at 7.30 pm, Grimaldi Forum Monaco
2024/2025 Season - Monaco Dance Forum. For over three decades, Oslo Danse Ensemble was Norway's most popular dance company. Paradoxically, they never performed outside their home country. When the company closed in 2018, it begged the question: how could Norway expect the world to understand its national culture if it remained such a closely guarded secret? Jo Strømgren Kompani has taken on the challenge of remedying that situation, bringing together a selection of creations by Jo Strømgren for this company in a triple-header "Made in Oslo".

Whom do we love, when we love? Do we ever know who it is that's loved? Is shared love nothing more than a fortunate misunderstanding? These eternal mysteries around the meaning of love are the stage for a showdown between two men. Abel Znorko, a winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, has withdrawn to a hermit-like existence on an island off the north of Norway, with coke, alcohol and psychedelics his only companions. There, he constantly relives his passionate yearning for a woman with whom he has been corresponding for years. Erik Larsen is a journalist, who has asked for an interview as a pretext for meeting the author. But what is his hidden agenda? And how is he linked to the woman who Znorko claims still holds his heart? And just why has this bitter old misanthrope, with his dark glasses, silk robe and shotgun, agreed to receive him?

There are rabbits appearing all around us, even in the parks and gardens of our beloved capital. But where are they coming from? Is this the latest manifestation of climate change? A sign of inexorable evolution at work? Former geographer Frédéric Ferrer attempts to answer these huge questions in the seventh part of his series of partly tongue-in-cheek lectures, begun in 2010. Accompanied by comedian Hélène Schwartz, he plunges into an all-encompassing investigation, with diagrams, equations, medieval engravings, and cuddly toys. A caustic masterclass that's as entertaining as it is enlightening.
