In 1975, Prince Rainier III instructed the Scientific Centre of Monaco ( C.S.M.) to create a protected underwater environment at the seashore of Monaco in order to contribute to the conservation of the Mediterranean Sea.
A group of Monegasques, driven by the will to protect the Mediterranean Sea, established the “Monegasque Association for the Protection of Nature”. The first measures put into place, led to the creation of the Larvotto Marine Reserve , 50 hectares , at the public beach of Monaco. For over 27 years now, this underwater reserve benefits of severe and continuously regulation which enabled a re-naturalization of species such as the Pinna Nobilis (noble pen shell), the sea urchin and the Red Corals.
Today, this association is not only involved in protecting the sea environment but it is also active in the reforestation of the hills surrounding Monaco.
