Since its inaugural launch in 2007 in Sydney (Australia), the event reached cities all over the world. Considered by the United nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon as the greatest demonstration for the fight against climate change, the transaction is a unique opportunity to call for a global mobilization against climate risk.

Since the negotiations in 1999 in Germany, Bonn, this organisation raises awareness amongst the participants of climate change conferences, assigning “fossil of the day” (sort of red cards) to countries whose behaviour is less beneficial in the fight against climate change. That NGO rarely assigns countries with the “Ray of the Day” for their exemplary campaigns in favour of climate.

In this context, Monaco has received, on December 3^rd 2012, the “Ray of the Day” for the announcement to reduce the Principality’s emissions of green house gases by 30% in 2020.

In 2010, the CO²-emissions of Monaco have been reduced by 19% in comparison to 1990.

The NGO stated that the conference needs such fine examples in order to encourage the other countries to follow this path.

Providing access to water to as many people as possible, conserving biodiversity, putting forward solutions to curb climate change and its effects: these are the three key action areas to which the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation is dedicated.

A huge environmental challenge when we know that tropical forests are home to more than 75% of the Earth’s biodiversity and their destruction is responsible for over 20% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Alarm bell has already rung… On the other side of the chain there is an economic sector: Tourism which has a real impact on the environment, and especially the business tourism, heavy consumer of wood and paper (ie: booth structure and printing publications…). Tourism has to be conscious of this Environmental issue.

Within the partnership with the brand SMART and Daimler AG, signed in December 2009, the Principality renews its automobile fleet of electric SMART on February 28^th, 2013.

The ten vehicles “SMART fortwo electric drive” are exclusively used by the State’s departments or by their concessionary companies who are already very committed in the field of zero emission.

The Princely Government encourages the purchase of electric vehicles by granting financial subsidies, and facilitates free reload of the batteries thanks to the 430 electric plugs all over Monaco. More advantages : the public parking spots in the streets of Monaco as well as the yearly registration fee is free of charge for electric vehicles.

At last, the partnership between Nice Côte d’Azur and Monaco offers the reciprocity of recharging electric vehicles and parking in the two agglomerations.

Since Monaco’s signature of the Kyoto Protocol in 1998 and ratified in 2006, the Principality is increasing its efforts in the field of environmental protection. It aims to reduce its CO² emissions by 8% before the end of 2012. By September 2011, a reduction of 15% had been achieved. The first actions taken by the Government to reduce these emissions have been in urban heating (representing about 31%), urban transportation (34%) as well as producing electricity for an entire district by burning house hold waste in the local incineration plant (30%).

In regards to this perspective, the Monegasque State, the Town Council, professionals in tourism sector as well as private companies increasingly channel their efforts to sustainable development. In order to follow the example of H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco, they committed themselves in different fields like deforestation, electric vehicles and its infrastructure, improved management of water and energy consumption, HQE constructions, and of course the organisation of Green Meetings and Green Events … while preserving the dream destination Monaco is.

The operation for a clean beach, consisting in distributing free ashtrays to the beach guests, has been carried out successfully for the last two years. This year again, Monaco’s Town Hall, the Monegasque Company of Hygiene and the Monaco Government Tourist and Convention Authority have come together to raise awareness among the tourists and the smokers to reduce the number of cigarette butts in the sand of our beach.

The free ashtrays are given out to tourists and locals every weekend in June at the “Larvotto” beach, followed by a daily distribution starting July 1st until September 15th 2012. 4000 ashtrays will be given out in total.

Monaco’s operation « Plage Propre » (Clean beaches in Monaco) was a real success this summer !

The summer season 2012 is over and Monaco’s operation for a clean beach was as successful as the last two years.

Because it works : thanks to the use of free ash trays, this year in white and red, (colours of Monaco), the number of cigarette butts on our beaches shrinks! The smokers appreciated the operation and did not hesitate to keep their ash trays for later use. The ones left behind, were emptied and cleaned by the employees of the Monegasque Company of Hygiene for redistribution.

The demeanour of the smokers as well as the employees of the Monegasque Company of Hygiene made it possible to expend 2000 ash trays instead of 4000, planned for the summer season 2012.

Monaco’s operation « Clean Beaches » was a success and will be renewed in 2013 !
